The UAE Cabinet, during its recent meeting, approved a new category of long-term residency in the country. This residency, named "Blue Residency," is specifically for environmental advocates. This visa represents the first long-term residency of 10 years granted to individuals who support environmental protection. It aims to support individuals with exceptional contributions and efforts in the field of environmental work and sustainability both within the UAE and abroad.
The Blue Residency will be granted specifically to those who support environmental work from various private and government entities. It includes members of international organizations, global companies, and non-governmental organizations. It will also be awarded to individuals who have received international awards, distinguished environmental activists, and researchers. Additionally, this residency will be given to both UAE citizens and residents who are responsible for supporting environmental protection.
The Blue Residency will be available through direct application via the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security, or through nominations by relevant authorities in the country.
The State's Initiative to Support Exceptional Contributions to Environmental Protection
This new residency system is part of the state's initiatives to celebrate 2024 as the Year of Sustainability. The sustainability campaign has been extended to 2024 after green topics dominated the previous year. In 2023, the state invited residents to join collective efforts to adopt sustainable practices.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, stated during the Cabinet meeting: "The sustainability of our economy is linked to the sustainability of our environment, and our national directives in this area are clear and steadfast." His Highness added: "In line with the national directives announced by the President of the UAE, designating 2024 as the Year of Sustainability in the UAE, we introduced the 'Blue Residency.' This is a ten-year residency granted to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to environmental protection, whether in marine life, terrestrial ecosystems, air quality, sustainability technologies, circular economy, or related fields."
Typically, the UAE issues residency visas valid for two years. In 2019, the country announced a 10-year residency program under the name of Golden Visas for investors and entrepreneurs. It was also granted to scientists, outstanding students, and humanitarian leaders. In 2022, the country introduced a five-year residency called Green Visas. The Green Visa is awarded to skilled professionals, freelancers, investors, and entrepreneurs.
